The Solemnity of All Saints

Revelation 7:2-4, 9-14; Psalm 24; 1 John 3:1-3; Matthew 5:1-12a

Holiness.

It is how we are to live our life in Christ Jesus. But do not confuse holiness with perfection. The women and men of every age that are standing alongside of us at every Eucharist and throughout our lives were not perfect. They and we are flawed. And therein lies our hope.

Holiness.

Our holiness is the work of Christ in us and for us. Leonard Cohen, the Canadian singer, song-writer and poet put it well in his song Anthem.

Ring the bells that still can ringForget your perfect offeringThere is a crack a crack in everythingThat’s how the light gets in.

Holiness is the light of Christ shining through our cracks. We become God’s light in spite of our brokenness. The wonder of God is that God’s marvelous works glisten through our human weakness. That is holiness.

Holiness may not be something as much to strive for as to simply welcome into our lives. To let holiness wash over us. A healing balm for our weakness and wounds. A light to show others the path. Because what we shall be has not yet been revealed.
