Though 30 years old, Bawer's book is still very timely and helpful. His clear presentation of gay people and their varied lives, fears and hopes is filled with annecdotes and stories. Bawer's critique of the gay subculture which he views as a detrimental to the majority of gay people because of its emphasis on stereotypes is cause for everyone in the gay and straight community to reflect upon. A must read for all people. May it lead to mutual and self understanding and acceptance.
